From 1997 to 2005, Cheryl Sullivan served as Vice Chancellor for External Affairs at IUPUI. As Vice Chancellor, she was responsible for improving IUPUI's image in the community and acting as a liaison between IUPUI and local businesses, government agencies, and members of the general public. This included marketing, general communications, and fund raising.
In 1998, Sullivan led IUPUI's campaign to revamp its athletics program. She led a search for a new name and logo for IUPUI's athletics teams and oversaw the completion of an NCAA Self Study to gain certification for a Division 1 Athletics Program. Sullivan came to IUPUI after spending years in state government and took a leave of absence from 2003 to 2004 to head the Family and Social Services Administration of the State of Indiana. She left IUPUI in 2005 after being named policy director for US Senator Evan Bayh.
