Suor Plautilla Nelli
The First Known Woman Painter of Florence
This exhibit is on display through March 31st across
from the Basile Gallery on the west wall.
Suor Plautilla Nelli (1524-1588), a nun and abbess of the convent Santa Caterina da Siena, is the first documented female painter of Florence when the field was dominated by men. Of the few surviving works by Plautilla Nelli, "Lamentation with Saints" is the most important. In 2005, an extensive conservation and restoration of Plautilla Nelli's Lamentation was done. Krista Hoffmann-Longtin is the Associate Director of the IUPUI Solution Center which connects businesses and nonprofit organizations to the university. As a filmmaker and advocate, Krista has worked on a variety of local productions, including her own film Gloria Steinem, The Spice Girls, and Me which explores young feminist identity and its relationship to media. She is the board president of the Indianapolis International Film Festival. Erin Newell is a film production veteran and advocate. From 1999-2007, she worked in Los Angeles as Vice President of Production for Level 1 Entertainment (producers of Rendition and Strange Wilderness) and with Kopelson Entertainment (producers of Oscar winner Platoon and Seven). Erin is now the director of Film Indiana.

Kristine Karnick. Ph.D. is the director of undergraduate studies in the communication studies department. Dr. Karnick specializes in mass media and society, film and television history, film and television aesthetics and criticism, media humor and comedy, film comedy, and early television history.
Kristy Sheeler, Ph.D., is an award-winning faculty member in the communication studies department who specializes in persuasion, political communication, interpersonal communication, public speaking, and business communication.
Each speaker will address different aspects of the representation of women in the media.

Suzy D’Enbeau (M.A., Duquesne University) is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication at Purdue University. Suzy studies feminist organizing, popular culture, and political economies. Suzy’s dissertation work will take place at BUST magazine in New York City where she will intern and explore intersections of feminism, consumerism, and activism.

Armed with a video camera, an inquiring mind, and an irreverent sense of humor, filmmaker Therese Shechter crisscrosses both the continent and her own psyche in hope of reconnecting to the power and sense of purpose that feminism gave her as a teenager in the 1970’s. In this 2005 film, Jane Austin’s story in “Pride and Prejudice” is reset in 21st century India with a backdrop of music, dancing, and romantic comedy. The result is an engaging and entertaining film by Gurinder Chadha, director of “Bend it Like Beckham”. A panel will follow discussing the cultural differences between 19th century England and 21st century India and the gender roles that cross both cultures even today. Film running time: 110 minutes.
