Candlelight Vigil

In honor of the great women of our past and present, the Women of Student African American Sisterhood (S.A.A.S) will be honoring their legacy by lining the walkways of University Courtyard with tea light candles. This vigil will be held in memory of the great women that have paved the way for the future generations. We would like to extend an invitation to all to come out and support this vigil. Light refreshments will be served.

“Ladies Night” Film and “Bonding with My Sister”

The purpose of the night is to stress the value of sisterhood in light of women's history month. A panel of local women engaged in environmental causes will talk about their activities. This year’s speaker will be Tanya Bell, CEO of Indianapolis Black Expo (IBE). This luncheon will encourage the women of the IUPUI campus and community to push their selves to a level of excellence previously thought to be unobtainable by previous generations.

At this meeting we will hear the “Words of Wisdom” form some of IUPUI’s brightest minds in that of Dr. Claudette Lands, Dr. Khaula Murtadha, and Dr. Regina Turner as they encourage us and share their stories and journeys through life. International Women’s Day

Come and celebrate the International Women’s Day with IUPUI. This event is free and open to the public. The reception starts at 6:30pm with featured performers at 7 pm. Featured performers will include fiction writer Amy Locklin, poet Allyson Horton (winner of Star Search at the Apollo), Judy Hanna and her group of belly dancers, and performance poet Tiffany Kyser with her band. At 8:20 p.m., the multicultural, multilingual open mike will begin. Please contact kkovacik@iupui.edu to reserve a slot. Open mike participants are asked to restrict themselves to one page of poetry or a half page of prose so that we can accommodate many voices. If you'd like to read a poem by a woman from another language, please also bring an English translation.

Wise Women: Third-Wave Feminists Reclaiming Her-Story

Venessa Bowers of the Communication Studies Department mentored 5 undergraduate students for this project in which students reflected on their own life history and interviewed older women (particularly those who came of age during second wave feminism in the 1960s and 1970s). She and the students have been awarded an IUPUI MURI (Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Institute) Grant. The students will be doing one of the first public presentations of their early findings as part of “Communication Week”.
