History of Women at IUPUI
Women faculty, staff and students have been a vital part of the life of IUPUI since its inception in 1969. They have been partners and leaders in the development of IUPUI as a modern urban university. The Office for Women has begun writing a document: “Milestones in the History of Women at IUPUI” to preserve a record of women’s contributions to this campus. It is a work in progress, so feel free to send your ideas, recollections, facts, and suggestions to us at ksgrove@iupui.edu. Task Force on the Status of Women Faculty
The establishment of this task force in 1994 was the starting point for the discussion of the status of women at IUPUI. In August 1994, Kathleen Warfel, President of the IUPUI Faculty Council and William Plater, Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculties, established this group and defined it’s charge. Chaired by Barbara Wilcox (8/94 to 10/95) and Rebecca Porter (11/95 to 5/96), the task force completed its report in May 1996 and recommended the establishment of the Office for Women and the creation of a Commission on Women.

IUPUI Office for Women
In early 1996, the Task Force and the IUPUI Administration submitted a Strategic Directions Charter Initiative Proposal to the IU President Myles Brand to fund the Office for Women for three years. When the initiative was funded, Chancellor Gerald Bepko initiated the search for a Director and appointed the Commission on Women Steering Committee to provide oversight for the office. Kathleen Warfel, a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine was named director and the office was established in October 1996. Other staff included Kimberly Quaid, an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Molecular Genetics as Assistant to the Director and Betty Wolf as Secretary. In 1998 Kathleen Warfel resigned and Kimberly Quaid became the Director. Rebecca Van Voorhis was appointed Assistant Director at that time.

Salary Pay Equity Studies at IUPUI
Two of the major research initiatives resulting from recommendations of the Task Force on the Status of Women were pay equity studies conducted for faculty/librarians and staff.
Faculty/Librarian Pay Equity Study
With financial support from the chancellor's office, a campus-wide study of pay equity for full-time faculty and librarians was begun in July 1997. The study was conducted under the direction of the Commission on Women’s Pay Equity/Support Equity Working Group with special advice from an ad hoc Pay Equity Study Technical Advisory Committee. Professor Paul Carlin, Department of Economics, IU School of Liberal Arts, Indianapolis, was the principal investigator. The study was completed in 1998 and a report released in September 1998.
Two of the principal researchers for the project, Professor Paul Carlin, and Patrick Rooney, Director of Research at the IU Center on Philanthropy, published an article describing the study. “Am I Paid Fairly? A University Assesses Pay Equity for its Faculties” was published in the magazine Change, volume 32, number 2, pages 40-49, in the March/April 2000 issue.
